Meeting with the inhabitants of Dai Island

Today you discover the small village of Dai, wedged between the deep waters of the reef and the high cliffs. Meet its inhabitants whose lives are punctuated by strong cultural traditions and the ocean. The men fish in their small pirogues or dive with harpoons to hunt tuna. The women hammer their laundry on the rocks by the sea. And children play in the ocean, surfing on homemade boards. And then you dive into the coral reefs that border the island. With its rich biodiversity, the site is home to many schools of fish including the strange hammerhead sharks. Dai will remain one of your best memories for a long time.

Day 5: Desperandum - Serua

The volcanic island of Serua and its hammerhead sharks

Head to Serua Island located in the heart of the Ring of Fire, an area that still has many active volcanoes and frequently records earthquakes. The small island of Serua is itself the tip of a still active volcano which emerges from 3,600m of depth in the sea and rises to 621m of altitude. It is only 8km2 in size and only one small village has been established there. Very isolated from the rest of the world, the villagers live a simple life, growing cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. After a visit of the village, you set out to discover its fabulous reefs and hammerhead sharks

Day 6: Serua - Manuk

The sanctuary of the sea snakes

Like its neighbor Serua, Manuk Island emerges from a depth of 3,000m in the sea at only 200m above sea level. It is a still very active volcano with rock chimneys giving off sulfurous vapors and hot rocks in the shallows. These warm waters are home to a rich community of sea snakes, dolphins, hammerhead sharks and huge schools of barracudas. Its lava flows are also exciting dive sites to explore. But when you approach Manuk Island, it is first of all in the sky that your attention is focused! Dozens of seabird colonies fly overhead. With its sheer cliffs, the island is an impenetrable sanctuary and perfect for frigate birds, gannets, brown boobies, white boobies and other seabirds that have made their nests in the trees.

Marine wonders of the Saparua region

You wake up facing the tiny island of Pombo. Its name, meaning pigeon in Portuguese, is explained by the Pombo birds endemic to the Maluku Islands that have settled in its rocks and palm trees. The water is so clear that you can observe its abundant coral reefs from the boat. It is a real paradise for underwater photographers. Then we head to Molana Island and its pristine white sand beaches. You enjoy a last dive on its coral wall and you might cross the path of eagle rays, sharks and napoleon fish.
